Love Shrine
2017
Tulle, Thread, Human Hair
Site Specific Installation
The artist main concern is the nature of love; how it is fleeting which is akin to how physical spaces change constantly over time. This site specific installation is inspired by Waterloo Centre, which is an aging building, surrounded by constant redevelopment. The artist sees the physical juxtaposition between the traditional and contemporary ways of life- a tension that constantly shifts. In response, she appropriates the domestic and an intimate form of the bed as a reflection of the struggle of traditional and contemporary values of love, which remains ephemeral in nature. The folds on the bed sheet act as a site that captures and records the transitional moments of change and impact. The installation sets to commemorate the soon to be forgotten traces whilst accepting changes at the same time. In its artificial colours, the coarse material of tulle and its floating state, the love shrine is overwhelming and not accommodating. Love is something we cannot touch but feel intensely.
The Noise Art Mentorship is part of Noise Singapore, an initiative of the National Arts Council. This year, the interdisciplinary art edition was co-programmed by OH! Open House from June 2016 to January 2017, and comprises mentoring sessions and workshops, culminating in this showcase.
